Image Formats for Websites

Hey! Let me explain what you need to know about picking the right image format for your website. It’s actually pretty important stuff!

So basically, there used to be just three main ways to save images for websites – JPEG, PNG, and GIF. But now we’ve got two new cool ones called WebP and AVIF. Let me break down when to use each one:

JPEG (say it like “jay-peg”):

– Best for regular photos, like pics you’d take on your phone

– Makes files smaller so your website loads faster

– Works everywhere, which is super convenient

– Only problem is it can get a bit blurry if you compress it too much

PNG:

– Perfect for screenshots or logos

– Keeps things super sharp and clear

– Can have transparent backgrounds (super useful for logos!)

– Files are usually bigger than JPEGs though

GIF:

– You know these – they’re the moving pictures everyone uses

– Great for short animations or reactions

– Can only show 256 colors (that’s why they sometimes look weird)

– Files can get pretty huge, so don’t use too many

WebP:

– It’s Google’s new thing and it’s pretty awesome

– Can do everything the others can do but usually makes smaller files

– Works in most browsers now

– Like, imagine if JPEG and PNG had a baby – that’s WebP!

AVIF:

– The newest kid on the block

– Makes super small files but keeps images looking great

– Really good with colors and stuff

– Works in most new browsers but some old ones might have trouble with it

So which one should you use? Here’s my advice:

– If your website lets you use AVIF or WebP, go for it! They’re the best overall

– For regular photos, use JPEG if you can’t use the new formats

– For screenshots or logos, use PNG

– Only use GIFs when you really need something to move

That’s pretty much it! Just remember – the smaller your image files are, the faster your website will load, and that’s super important these days. Hope this helps! 😊
